Cyanotype is an old photographic process that uses ultra violet light exposure to print images. Each Japanese stencil design was printed on a transparency, then overlaid on a fabric panel treated with special non-toxic chemicals, covered with glass, and placed under UV lights. The panels are then rinsed and the clear cyanotype blue and white images appear.

It is a serendipitous process; no two panels print exactly alike, so there may be some color variation.

The Japanese stencil designs or “Katagami” is a centuries old tradition of designs cut into washi paper.
