The “Orchids of Hawaii” BOM Quilt combines hand or machine appliqué and sashiko. There are 10 orchid blocks, and 2 sashiko leaf borders. The quilt is finished with a facing instead of a binding.
Inspiration for the quilt came from my Hawaii garden where orchids grew in lush abundance. I spent many hours studying orchid photos and sketching their best aspect to make them look realistic and dimensional. I wanted to create a medley of orchids floating on a black background, and to use sparingly so as not to distract, one complementary batik and small bits of accent green to play off the green sashiko foliage.
