Kitty Pippen was quilting “royalty.” She was renowned for her use of Japanese fabrics and techniques in her quilts. Her unique sense of color, design and texture were remarkable. Our quilting community was overjoyed when both Kitty and her daughter, Sylvia, moved to La Conner in 2014.

It was always a treat to be around this diminutive lady with sparkling eyes and hear her talk about her travels, tell how she developed a certain pattern, or brag about her daughter’s beautiful sashiko patterns.

Kitty Pippen’s first exhibit here, Quilts with a Japanese Flair, was curated by the Museum’s founder, Rita Hupy, in 2002. Quilting with Japanese Fabrics was her second exhibit in 2015. Kitty passed away in August, 2018. This exhibit, Remembering Kitty, honors her legacy and irreplaceable presence in our quilt and fiber arts community.

All exhibit pieces were loaned by Sylvia Pippen.

2019-05-09 Flight Block of the Month

Hello Everyone!

Our next drop in Flight class is Saturday May 11, 9-12.

Note on the Kingfisher Block:

The width and length dimensions of the block are very close. I checked the schematic in your instructions and I was not consistent how I listed the dimensions of every block.
Most are obvious, but not the Kingfisher. Thanks Mary for bringing this to my attention!

The finished dimensions of the kingfisher block is listed width (horizontal) first, length (vertical) second; 9 1/4 " wide x 8 3/4" long. So trim your block to 9 3/4" wide by 9 1/4" long.

Don't trim until you finish the rest of the blocks; always hedge your bets to see how it all fits!

2019-02-18 Flight Block #3 Goldfinch

Hello Flight folks,

Attached is a mistake brought to my attention on the big pattern of the Gold Finch. C & D (wool branch) goes over the sashiko maple leaf on the actual quilt, instead of stopping at the edge of the sashiko Maple leaf.

I darkened the portion in photograph that is missing. If you have appliqued the branched down already and are happy with it, no need to make a correction!

2019-02-05 Trumpeter Swans update

Hello Flight Folks,

A small correction on the large pattern of the Trumpeter Swans:
There is an incorrect arrow pointing to piece #27.
If you use the cutting guide, all the pieces should fit together properly.

Our monthly drop in classes are so fun and thank you for bringing your tips and techniques to share.
Here is a great one shared last Saturday:

Use Fray check or Fray Block on the edges of your wool piece to keep them from fraying.This works especially well on the fine serrated wing tips of the Swans or the Maple leaves in the Goldfinch block.
I have tried both products and don't see a difference between the two. You can apply the Fray check or Block on the edges while the freezer paper is still on the piece. It makes it easier to handle. Be sure to let them dry completely before gluing or stitching them down. Both products are pretty smelly until they dry and have flammable warnings. I have not tested washing the wool treated with the fray products.

I am stocking both products in the shop and online; they should be available by next week.

Some of you have started your Blue Jays Block and I just received feedback about an omission. I forgot to put the M (Left hand Jay belly) template on the cutting guide.
Please trace it onto your freezer paper from the pattern, leaving 1/4" extra where it goes under the wing feathers.
It requires a very small piece of wool. You can use the same pear fabric that is used for the stems or use blue wool.

Before we ship, we need your credit card information and whether you want to receive your blocks in a "one time shipment" or receive them monthly (one block per month over an 11 month period).

We've added many more bolts to our Charley Harper Fabric collection, an in store exclusive at Indigo Stitch, our shop at 128 S 1st Street La Conner, WA.
Charley Harper (1922 - 2007) created thousands of bold, stunningly colorful works of art that portray wildlife in a style that he coined "minimal realism". Birch Organic Fabrics has the license to produce his images on high quality poplin fabric. Mary Ann has made some wonderful pillows showcasing his fabrics. We also have a collection of Clothworks "Robins."

I love Scandinavian folk art and was inspired by this traditional Christmas Tree design. The background fabric is a mottled green Grunge from Moda Fabrics.

First the design is stitched with white Olympus sashiko thread, then double stitched on the inside of the design with light blue, red, gold, and light green Olympus sashiko thread. Double stitching enhances the colors and adds more visual effect.

Colonial knots are used for the flower stamens; they are easier to execute with heavy thread than French knots.

The panels does not come with thread so you can choose your own colors.

It would be a great center piece for a quilt, a wall hanging or for a pillow.

2018-02-01 Tulip Festival Indigo Stitch

We are gearing up for the 2018 Skagit Valley Tulip Festival in La Conner. It has been a cool rainy spring so the tulips are slowly budding up and just starting to open. The Skagit fields are awash in gold and white daffodils; the overture to the rainbow of colors to come.

We are busy at Indigo Stitch stocking up on new fabrics; come and check out our new Moda Grunge blenders and our Charley Harper bird fabrics. Birch fabrics obtained the license to produce Harper's designs on organic fabric and they are flying out the door!

My book, Paradise Stitched is back in print and available both online and in the shop. We have a new notion the is very popular, our Big Stitch Marking Wheel. Use it with Lowell-Cornell white transfer paper and mark straight geometric stitching lines. Fast & easy! It comes with two different wheels with small and large stitching sizes.

We are now open 7 days a week! Come by for a visit, check out our new fabric and notions, workshop claendar, and be sure to show us your projects!

We opened Friday evening December 15th for Ladies Shopping Night in La Conner; it rained and hailed but some hearty souls braved the weather to cheer us on. There are many of Sylvia's quilts on display plus all the products posted online. Shopping online is convenient, but if you would like to see the products in person, come to Indigo Stitch and meet Sylvia and her staff. We love to meet our customers!

The shop is light, bright, with great views of passing boats on the channel, resident seals, otters, seagulls, Bald Eagles & Great Blue Herons. Dine at the Waterfront Cafe next door, visit the Pacific Northwest Quilt and Fiber Arts Museum, and shop in our many boutiques.

We will also be featuring items in the store that we don't sell online such as pillows, handbags, and gifts.

2017-11-01 BIG NEWS! We are opening a store in La Conner WA

We have decided to move the business out of the house and into a lovely waterfront space in the historic Pier 7 building on the main street of La Conner Wa. We started moving just two weeks ago and now have the whole operation shuttled downtown; a huge 1/2 mile move!
Our online business will be based in the store as well and we will build the retail side through the winter months.
We hope to have a small opening in the middle of December. I will keep you posted!

I am very excited to offer you early registration for my new "Perennial Favorites" BOM in the works. Perennial Favorites is a nine patch quilt of garden flowers combining wool applique and Sashiko. Brighten up your winter months working on this new adventure. only 2 embroidery stitches to use for embellishment.

The background fabric is lovely Essex, from Robert Kaufman, a linen/cotton blend with a weighty hand that is stable enough to hold the wool applique but with a loose enough weave to easily pull thick sashiko thread through it.

Working with Wool is a bit like working with real flowers: the soft textural feel of wool is delightful and there are NO edges to turn. Flowers can be easily fussy cut and embellished with threads to appear dimensional. Foliage is outlined in light green thread with a simple Sashiko running stitch.
